Cairo to Cape Town

Hey All,

In June 2007 I posted the idea to do a trip from Cairo to Cape Town.
Some of you were interested and I am about to start with more detailed planning,
so I thought I will see who is still interested.

Dates:  Beginning of December 2009 till middle February 2010
               Roughly 2.5 months.

Main plan thus far:

1) Ship vehicles to Alexandria, Egypt
(takes more or less 35-40 days, so needs to be shipped end of October 2009)

2) Drive from Egypt back to RSA following the East African Route including:
Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana.

3) Also possible to include Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

Budget:
I will start to work on a budget.

To give you an idea of shipping costs:
The shipping of a 20 foot container for a single vehicle (including handling fees, etc.) is in the order of R20 000.
A 40 foot container for two vehicles is in the order of R35 000.

Then of course the fuel will be the other big expense.  Taking the shortest way from Cairo to Cape Town is
approximately 12 000 km, but venturing from the main roads from time to time will add to this.
I still have to get an idea of fuel prices in all the countries, but with the current state of the economy it might change
a lot in the next 12 months.

Other expenses includes documents such as a Carnet de Passage for the vehicles.

As far as I understand, South Africans do not need to apply for visas for East African Countries, but can get them at the borders.
It might however be better to apply for some countries, especially if the application forms at the borders are all in Arabic.
To help with visas, http://www.visaszone.co.za/  is apparently a good place to get all documents and tanslations done.

At the moment we are are two Syncro's and looking for more vehicles to join us.
If you are interested, let me know and I keep you up to date with plans, budgets etc.
